A simple interview and quick test of your skills is often all that is required for you to be placed on the agency books and you could be placed in a position by the very next day.
If you’re considering this option there are a few things you can do to make yourself more attractive to potential agency employers. First of all, the agency will be interested in your typing speed and whether you have had any experience with dictation (both normal and legal). Make sure you have any certificates to prove these qualifications when you go to your interview, and practice your typing skills before hand – particularly as many agencies will set you a short typing test when you’re at the interview. Another good tip is to take any degree or diploma certifications with you as this may gain you a higher pay rate – for example, some governments and big organisations who are eager to gain qualified employees will offer a slightly higher rate for those with educational certification.
Once employed it may be the agency’s prerogative to move you to short term jobs until you have demonstrated your capabilities and loyalty to the company. If you are looking for a permanent secretary position then make this clear at the interview.
